Uganda has one of the youngest and fastest-growing populations on earth, and its classrooms cannot keep up. Uganda’s Baseline Education Census 2025 recorded around 9.12 million primary learners, with public primary schools reporting a pupil-to-classroom ratio of 50 and a pupil-to-teacher ratio of 48, roughly double the figures seen in private schools. That means fifty children sharing one room, often without desks, often under a leaking roof.
The shortage is set to worsen. UNICEF projects that Uganda will need 35,000 more primary classrooms and 48,000 more primary teachers by 2040 just to keep pace with population growth. Access is also deeply unequal. Secondary enrolment among the richest fifth of the population is around five times higher than among the poorest fifth, and children in rural districts are the ones left behind.

MWA Charity works with community leaders in Uganda who provide the land and the labour. We fund the construction, furnish the classrooms, and equip the children. Nothing is built without local agreement, and nothing is left half finished.

The school is being built in an underserved rural community identified with local partners, in an area where existing classrooms are temporary structures and the nearest permanent school is too far for young children to walk. Construction typically runs several months from the point at which the funding goal is reached, depending on the rainy season and material supply. Donors are updated at the foundation, roofing, and handover stages.
